What is Tui Na?

Originating in China, Tui Na, which is pronounced “tween-uh,” is the oldest known form of massage. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

“What is going on in your mind will find a place in your body”

Traditional Tui Na massage works on mind and body as a whole. The aim is to stimulate Qi (life force) and blood circulation, strengthen muscle and joints, and clear blockages that causes Qi and blood stagnation in order to reduce pain. Depending on the patient’s condition, Di also combines Tui Na massage with ‘Gua Sha’ (scraping the skin with a massage tool), cupping (used on skin to promote circulation, relieve pain, and balance energy – see photo below) and moxa (dried mugwort, burned to warm acupuncture points, stimulating circulation and energy (‘Qi’) in the body. Expect to feel re-energised, lighter and rested in both body and mind.

What can Tui Na massage help with?

Tui Na can help with many conditions including back pain, stress-related disorders, sciatica, neck pain and stiffness, joint pain and limited joint movement, repetitive sprain injuries, digestive disorders, insomnia, headaches & migraine, painful periods, whiplash injuries, chronic pain, asthmatic symptoms, sinusitis, sport injuries and depression.

Concessions sometimes available

Is Tui Na performed on a massage couch?
Yes but can also be conducted on a chair if the patient prefers.

Do I need to take my clothes off?
No, a Tui Na treatment does not require the patient to undress. You can wear loose clothing and Di will cover you with a towel or blanket during the massage. Removing some clothing may be necessary for cupping or Gua Sha, but Di will ask you in advance and give you options if he thinks either treatment would be helpful.

How long does a Tui Na session last?
A Tui Na treatment can be 45-50mins long. The first session usually takes longer as Di needs to build up a full case history in order to develop a constructive plan for the treatment.

About Di

Di has been practicing Traditional Tui Na  since qualifying in 2018 from the Shulan College of Chinese Medicine in Manchester. Prior to that he worked as a Personal Trainer, supply teacher and in an office environment. His enthusiasm for Tui Na came to light after suffering from chronic lower back pain due to stress and sitting over a long period of time. He tried different kinds of treatment but none of them worked until he found Tui Na and his back responded to it positively.

He has been practicing meditation for many years and teaches Buddhism and meditation at the Manchester Buddhist Centre. The principles of mindfulness and loving kindness guide his way of living and approach to treatment.

Di is also a fully qualified Personal Trainer and has years of experience working in the fitness industry. He draws up individual workout plans, combining lifestyle advice and Tui Na massage, in order to develop a comprehensive health system for the benefit of people’s wellbeing.

I have had a Tui Na massage with Di couple of times now. My problem is my upper back is very stiff due to a sitting job. Di did gua sha on my upper back and shoulders and I felt so much better. After only 2 sessions, I felt like a new person.Di is a very attentive and professional masseur whom I can trust. I highly recommend 👍

I have been searching for a good massage for years now. The problem is, trying to find a good masseuse can be a costly search! I’m happy to say my search is over. Di’s hands are exactly what I was looking for. His attention to detail and intuitive approach made the whole experience not just relaxing but effective. I felt like I finally hit back on that ‘massage high’ that drew me in so many years ago. I left feeling released, taller and open to the world.

On top of that, his prices are incredibly reasonable meaning it no longer has to be a once a year treat. I’d go back to Di whenever I had a tension, pain or even just to help me open back up to the world again and let go of all that mental and emotional tension that builds up over time. Thank you Di for your magic hands!
